Watering Instructions for New Seed

A simple three-phase watering plan to help new grass germinate, establish deeper roots, and transition into a healthy lawn.

Last Updated: April 2, 2026

Frequent light watering: During the first stage, the goal is to keep the top 1.5 inches of soil consistently moist, but never saturated.

Phase 1: The Germination Window (Days 1-21)

This stage is all about helping seed germinate evenly and preventing the soil surface from drying out.

  • Frequency: Water 2 or more times daily based on soil moisture.
  • Duration: 5 to 10 minutes per session.
  • Timing: Start early in the morning, ideally before 8:00 AM, so the soil gets a good soak before the wind picks up. Finish with a final watering in the late afternoon, around 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM.
  • Avoid night watering: In Minnesota's humid spring conditions, watering after dark can encourage damping off, a fungal disease that can kill baby grass.

Phase 2: The Establishment Window (Day 22 to First Mow)

Once you see a green haze across the lawn, shift the focus from surface moisture to deeper root growth.

  • Frequency: Reduce watering to once daily or every other day.
  • Duration: Increase each watering to 15 to 20 minutes.
  • The goal: Water deeply enough to reach 3 to 4 inches into the soil.
  • Why this matters: If you keep watering lightly and frequently at this stage, roots stay near the surface and the grass can struggle as soon as the first hot June weather arrives.

Phase 3: Post-Mowing (The Independence Phase)

After the new grass has been mowed at least twice, transition to a standard deep-and-infrequent schedule.

  • Target: Apply about 1 inch of water per week, delivered in one or two longer sessions.

Minneapolis-specific adjustment: Let current conditions guide the schedule. Cool, wet weather may let you skip a cycle, while hot, dry, or windy days may require an extra session to keep the seedbed from drying out.
